High Tea!

After a godawful week, ladybugs suggestion of High Tea was the best thing I had heard. I was excited to meet her and another friend who was down on vacation. So off we went to Galle face hotel High Tea.

For me the word high tea somehow conjures up the image of the mad hatters tea party in Alice in wonderland. I walked into the veranda and for a minute I was confused with what was happening. There was rows and rows of food.

Pastries, savouries, sandwiches and what not. There was a whole load of vegetarian food too. I didn't have the tea but had ice coffee and we stuffed ourselves and laughed so much maybe a bit loudly.

The veranda and the ambiance is really great. Walked out into the rains. argh it was pouring!

Various......

The past two days this week i have been chased by two buses overtaking each other and making my life miserable. (my car was in between these two buses) . I cant seem to get rid of them until we reach some sort of junction.

So when today a bus gave way to turn i did a double take and was looking around to make sure it was me that he was giving way for... Then the bus driver winks.. (yes its u i have bestowed the honour of not running over today.)

Speaking to M the college friend
M : My life is a treadmill
Me: U mean u have been working out nonstop
M : I have been walking all the time, its like walking and walking and more walking. Though i would ride a bike for a change and tried to run over an eighty year old woman.

(M just moved to australia to do her masters.)

I was laughing so much after talkign to her..
only excitement i had in return to tell her was how i got home from work , cooked dinner and fell asleep on the couch. Pathetic..

Hurray that we got the long weekend..

Last week!

The last one week has been an eye opener of sorts for many things. Sent some milk powder and biscuits for the IDP, with help from B. I am taken aback when I asked some people for help and they were disinterested.

In a turn of events talking to a very close friend I was shocked when she suddenly asked me " As an indian what is your view on the war"

Before i could open my mouth and answer hello i am sri lankan, she went on about how we (indians) should mind our own business. She also continued The IDPs who are crossing over if one gets shot in a family so what its not such a loss. The tamils in sri lanka have too many rights in holding properties and went on to attack that most of us are moral less and quoted gossip stories about different people who are having affairs blah blahs.

I should have opened my mouth and argued that gossip stories are there in every race. (can i really use the word race here) It does not make me moral less. But i didnt i kept quite. this is a one off story but i think i got very affected since its someone who i have been very close with...

Can you be friends with your Ex?

A friend calls up and asks advice that her husband’s Ex wants to be friends again with him. (Confused? Yeap join the club?). Story is this Friend (F) and her Husband (FH)have been married for many years now. The FH s ex (FHX) i.e his first girlfriend from school has called him up and wants to be friends with him.

I should write an equation on this. Anyways, F was freaking out since FHX has called up FH saying that she is unhappy in her marriage having lots of problems and that she is very ill and they should be in touch. Red alert there! FH is a decent enough guy to have told F about this, but is not being enthusiastic enough to listen to F and not be friends with FHX. F was losing her marbles and totally freaking out since this was a strong long affair from school onto university.

My personal opinion was you cant be friends with and Ex. Obviously even if u are happily settled now your first love will always be special. Call me old fashioned but there it is. What is your opinion on this? Can we be friends with the Ex?

Pasta Mania

Having lunch with my friend at a very popular restaurant ( no i am not going to name them and tarnish their image or whatever) i was served a very beautiful plate of pasta. I have a bit of a pasta mania and tend to order it whenever the opportunity arises. Friend stuck to a basic sandwich and was happily eating almost finishing the meal and there i was waiting for the pasta. After signalling the waiter a couple of times since i was starving i was quite happy that it was taking ages, obviously they were chopping the veges and making it fresh.

So there came the beautiful plate with beautiful looking pasta and vegetables. It looked so lovely and appetizing, i did not want to eat it.....

I shouldn't have cause the minute i put a forkful in my mouth. Something was really wrong. The panic in my eye gave signals to friend.

Friend : What is wrong with it

Me : I dunno i think spoilt ( and i continue to forcefeed my second helping into my mouth)

Friend : DONT EAT IT

(There goes the third spoon into my mouth, i wanted to throw up but did not want to complain in case the chef spits on my drink or whatever) Friend brought the situation into control by pushing plate away and calling the waiter.

Waiter : Any problem miss

Me : i think its got spoilt (with this apologetic smile from me )

Waiter : Might be old, let me the get manager

Oh my god, i died, did i hear him say it might be old. Manager comes inquires same and yes confirms might be kind of old and serves up something else for me.

Lesson learnt. If its spoilt, its spoilt. Dont eat it... ( think will stay off pasta for a bit)

Deserving to be Happy!

Talking to best friend M, I came to realize that you have to believe that you really deserve to be happy. Hemm I never thought of happiness like that. It was more on the scene of why am I not happy or satisfied? But after frantic texting and calling she said one thing which stuck in my mind that you have to believe that you really deserve to be happy.

So trying to incorporate that into my little world has been difficult. But as changes take its own pace of time. Thinking that you deserve something makes you work towards that goal.

So heres to more happy moments (with the added bits of heart aches and sorrows).

Friend’s husband and my friend

Mum calls up in the middle of a work day whispering that she needs to talk to me urgently.

Me: why are u whispering?

Mum: I am at the jewelers

Me: (repeat same sentence) Why are u whispering

Mum: your friends here and your friend’s husband.

Me: Mum I don’t care why are u calling me about this

Mum: (repeats the same sentence again) your friends here and your friends husband

Me: amma I really have to go

Mum: iooo what is wrong with u your friends husband is here with another one of your friends

Me: what

Now real explanation to find out that a friends husband H and another friend (who is obviously not the wife) R are at the jewelers. Simple enough that they must have gone to buy something for H’s wife obviously. So tried to explain clearly to mum that they must be buying something for his wife. Mum thinks she is onto something and says no he is trying it on this one (the necklace or whatever) and patting her neck.

Me: Mum why don’t u move closer to their table and eavesdrop (this was in a sarcastic tone since I can’t tell my mum to please mind your own business)

Mum: Good idea I’ m moving tables

Shit what have I done now…? I really at that point thought there is some sort of mistake since my mum can have a vivid imagination… I was kidding about moving tables of course and she has taken it seriously.

I had non stop calls all day from my mum that definitely he has bough 400000 worth of jewels for friend (not wife). I just let my mom have a dose of bold n beautiful Colombo style and did not try to correct her. As life has its wonderful ways within two days I was called for lunch With H‘s wife and some friends. H was there but avoiding the friend who he has been with at the jewelers and not making contact very obviously. I don’t know I did not do what women usually do and discuss it with another woman there but had to get it out of my system so blogged it here.

I can’t really go up to friend and tell her this story without getting my facts right. I could not ask other friend what she was doing at the jewelers because I felt odd. So now I am part of this saga or is this all a mistake???

Cheesy Situation

I like cheese. Well not the smelly blue cheese kind of thing but I like kraft cheddar. Friend from UK was down and she was going on and on about her wine and cheese sonot to be outdone I said I also like wine and cheese. Think I was trying to show off that I lived there and ate wine and cheese for a bit of my life some time back. To be frank all that I ate was the big ball cheese which you get here anyways (while I was secretly longing for kraft cheese).

So friend comes back last month with a whole load of cheese. I mean all kinds u name it, it was there. I felt like crying since anyday I would have preferred a handbag or some make up instead (Yes I am vain). Tried the cheese and it was sick I could not find one kind that I liked. So gifted it off to another friend who loves cheese and was laughing her head off (since she gets the chocolates n I get the cheese) . I know the best would be to come out clean and tell her that I detest the cheese but don’t want to cheese her off…

FB N Me

I think I am one of the last in the civilization of internet users to join Facebook. I don’t know why I never bothered to for the long time that FB has been existent. One fine day just joined to see what my class mates look like. I know the usual reason should be to keep in touch with friends but I am bit weird like that curiosity of seeing people from school and college made me join FB.

Really no point in me praising the wonders of it. Since all who use it know, I have got in touch with some friends who I have not heard in years from. I could go and on but better stop about that now. Now that I have become a regular user I get all kinds of invitations from unknown guys. This must be the usual scene if you are single (which I am not). Sometimes for a mad moment I wonder if I know these people and can’t remember of what so I proceed to check their profile out. Surprisingly the profile of these men is full of women. This has happened like three times now. These guys must be really filling their facebook with girls who they don’t know or randomly clicking girl sounding names or something. Giving the benefit of the doubt maybe these guys are really nice people and want to strike up a friendship ( don’t think so!)

A Category Food

Out on a girls night out found out some interesting new aphrodisiacs (herewith called the A Category) that I have never heard of. Why we wandered on to this subject where you could add endless lists I have no clue. Some of the common aphrodisiacs that I have heard of being asparagus, oysters, ginseng tea, strawberries and so on. Some of my cousins have told me that drumsticks also belong to the A category. Have no idea where that came from unless they were trying to increase the murunga market which has seen better days anyways.

So out with the girls and catching up with different topics, one girl said that Camels milk is major in the Middle East. I thought ok there are no buffalos and cows in the dessert, so probably they drink this instead. She went on to explain that camel’s milk has A grade qualities. Camels milk, was a bit flabbergasted that people drink a camels milk. This is a big time A category thing and there are sweets made out of it which are suppose to be a big hit with the men. Felt a big finicky thinking of eating camels milk sweet but it’s suppose to be like a soan papdi (Indian sweet).

Social Butterfly

Well for anyone who thinks that I am one, well sorry to disappoint you I aint one but had the opportunity to attend ones party. Arrived at the venue with a couple of friends. We were clueless with what the protocol was or whatever (this was the first time we were invited so there goes…). Anyways sat down took a coke to look important. Had a tremendous laugh looking at the butterflies. Boy did they come in the dozens.

If anyone thinks I am a jealous cow, sorry I am not. I wanted to see what it was all about. It was all about the best clothes and the Gucci sunglasses (not the fake ones from House of fashions) n lot of bling clothes. That was unnecessarily catty, some of them were very simple and normal. All of them of course knew each other and just glanced at us wondering possibly if any competition was coming up.

So these gangs of people I suppose always get invited and photographed together and comment on each others clothes. Being a Fashionista must be a load of work what with the forty/fifty/ sixty year olds flaunting a twenty year old body with the latest in clothes. They probably cant repeat their outfits either n their jewellery. I clearly was out of place with no jewellery but with clothes on which were comfortable. Clearly the clothes of Fashionista have to be not comfy and tight so u are straight as a rod and you have to keep your sunglasses on even inside a room. I am all hands up for the uncomfortable shoes cause I wear shoes like that too. I love shoes so fashionistas have got that right. Air kissing is such a no no. If it’s a good friend I would really go and hug her/ him if I am happy to see them not kiss the air so that my make up does not come off ……

The climax of all this was the buffet which was fashionably late. Fashionistas clearly do not eat and catering was done with them in mind with a load of celery sticks, carrots, and cucumber. We ate all the carb filled stuff that the others would not even look at...

Good fun was had by all.

Weekend with Jazz

The weekend just flew by with me doing my favorite stuff. That is absolutely nothing work related or home related. Met up with friends for coffee at Café Du Monde. I had never been there before and I must say the salads and breads are superb.

Sunday morning was invited to join a bunch of friends going for the Jazz Festival at Mount. Well I have never been to a Jazz festival was quite excited and worried about it. I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy the music but decided will not know if I don’t go. Looked at the ticket it said six to eleven. Left home at seven get to the road leading to hotel and get stuck in major traffic. Was slightly worried that I am missing out the jazz and there won’t be any seats.

The cars were moving and snail pace and there was such a big crowd. But this was not for jazz but for some party or music show at Mount Berjaya. Anyways got to the Mount Lavinia hotel at eight. Got to the terrace and there was no one on stage so I guess when they say six they start later (note to be remembered for future festivals). The ambience was just great. Then the four guys turned up and started playing, they were really good. It was one superb evening…..

Letter Writing VS Emails

After so many years I sat down and wrote a letter to a friend in England. It made me realize that I don’t do that at all. The fact that her Christmas letter from last year was in my drawer might have been a initializing thing. I did not send her a reply by letter last year but emailed her back. But I am happy I did it. These days its just been emails. I keep in touch with friends only through emails of Face book or sms. Why is it that the art of letter writing is lost?

Advantages of email writing is its easy to type, prompt and I think I am plain lazy to sit down and write. About ten years ago I spent so much money on buying all this perfumed flowery stationary to write and keep in touch with friends or pen pals. Now its an email and no pen pals but chat friends.

But the letter to Santa from the kids is sent without fail since I have to write the four year olds one. Its posted to north pole without a senders address. Maybe I should make up a santa id and mail him as well with the list of gifts required. Then santa could reply that the fifth pixel chick and tenth Thomas the Tank Engine is a big no no and the kids should get Enid blyton and the noddy series……

Meeting For Coffee

After many days of postponing meeting up with different set of friends made it last evening to coffee bean. Everyday passing by the place it looks always packed. And packed it was. It is quite expensive but the coffee and desserts are really much better than other places here. The sandwich was nothing much to shout about. There was a young couple making out in one of the sofas. My friends kept turning around and staring at them so much that they left. So if u do end up going to the new coffee spot where everyones running to try the walnut brownie.

The thing with Colombo is I am still to come across a very good coffee (except the one I make at home). There is this five bucks coffee that u get in Chennai. That is the best coffee I have ever had in my life.
